This past weekend saw another successful Open House Chicago. Here are my thoughts about and images following two days of walking throughout Chicago’s Downtown and surrounding areas.
Chicago’s Daley Plaza was served as the first station for the annual Way of the Cross processional through the streets of Chicago on Good Friday ending at Holy Name Cathedral. Here are my thoughts from and images from what was an uplifting event—even for nonbelievers.
St. Patrick’s Day is the real deal in Chicago, so I headed out to capture those wearin’ the green on Saturday. Much to my surprise, pro-Palestinian demonstrators ‘crashed’ the festivities mid-afternoon. Here are my thoughts about and images from the day.
Ten days I attended a pro-Palestinian demonstration that shut down Michigan Avenue, raising serous questions whether spontaneous shutdowns of public right-of-ways are appropriate. Here are my thoughts about that issue, as channeled through six weeks of pro-Palestinian demonstrations, as well as my images from the particular demonstration.
The Money Shot. My thoughts about and images from the Duck Derby
I headed down to Federal Plaza today for a demonstration calling for the boycott of July 4th. It was lead by Rabbi Michael, who spent the better part of an hour explaining why Black people should not celebrate July 4th. Here are my thoughts about and images from the small, but impactful demonstration.
Today, I ventured out with an infrared camera. My subject was the Chicago River from Michigan Avenue to Chinatown. The output includes high contrast monochrome images, with some color tossed in. These are classic tourist shots, but with a twist. Along the way, László Moholy-Nagy and Bertrand Goldberg make appearances. After watching a documentary on Moholy-Nagy, I had to bend things a bit.
Pillows fell from the sky. White was everywhere, but only for 90 minutes. It stopped shortly before my root canal. Enjoy the images from my walk from Piccolo Sogno to the endocrinologist.
Today Chicago was hit with another sloshy snowstorm during the afternoon and early evening commute. It look several hours for the slush to become white snow cover. The Loop was filled with commuters heading the the train stations. For my images and thoughts, click on the image below.

At 1PM, the temperature is down to 5-degrees Fahrenheit, but the wind chill makes it feel like 10 to 15 degrees below-zero. Layers are essential, but unfortunately, I have not found a pair of gloves that allows me to operate at camera without taking them off.

No snow today. The temperature was well above 32F until sunset. Yet, for me, today marked the start of winter. I was still after that elusive photograph of the new Apple store that overlooks the Chicago River.

Finally, after at least a year and half, Apple's new flagship store opened tonight at 5PM, with Apple CEO Tim Cook on the premises. The hordes were out there, worshipping the glass monolith just as the apes worshipped the black monolith in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. From the monolith comes knowledge.

Sometimes your best shot is behind you, which was the case today (and maybe everyday in the case of this location). Standing at the foot of glass tower, I looked up, discovering the reflective qualities of its skin. The partitioned mirrors serve to compress the six blocks of riverscape to the east. Even better, the mirrors create wavy distortion. A great take on the riverscape.

Photographers always find new opportunities whenever a new building is completed. 150 North Riverside Plaza provides many opportunities given the elevated public space in back of the building and the promenade running along the Chicago River. Once it opens, the Starbucks may also offer some interesting opportunities, but that will depend on the depth of the outlet.
