Signs are everywhere in New York City, taking many forms. Collectively, the signage reveals our collective consciousness. On this trip, the signage brought together Halloween and the Presidential election, which complemented each other. One produced anxiety, while the other reduced it. Here are my thoughts about the signs and images from daily walks.
Once again, I was on 6th Avenue in New York City’s Greenwich Village for the annual Village Halloween Parade, where over one million spectators and participants joined me, everyone of us seeking a brief respite from the two-year lead-up to next Tuesday’s presidential election. On February 10, 2024, I attended what appeared to be a rather anodyne pro-Palestinian demonstration in Brooklyn. I left for about half an hour. When I returned, I encountered a number of demonstrators who had been detained by the police.
