All in Food
I stop to photograph this year’s Columbus Day Parade on my way to my annual physical. The parade is a shadow of the one staged for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; although the film did not identify the parade as the Columbus Day Parade. I ended up racing around so much that the doctor had to wait 20 minutes before taking my blood pressure because I was dripping with sweat when I arrived in his office—112/78.
Here are my thoughts about what I saw and the images I captured.
Today, I heard the summer’s first sizzle, as the heat engulfed my exposed skin. Here are some images, together with my thoughts about Chicago’s first wonderful day of the year.
The 90th Annual Bud Billiken Parade

Rain was in the forecast today, but on North Avenue Beach, it was nowhere to be found. Sunny, warm, but none of the July and August humidity was in the air, which probably kept beach attendance down a bit, but there were still plenty of people milling about. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. Volleyball, touch football, castles in the sand, and the smell of a little reefer in the air.

Several years back, Nutella was the rage on college campuses. The little single serving packets were replacing salt, sugar, and butter packets in college cafeterias, with administrators being forced to keep a sharp eye on students loading pockets, purses, and backpacks with dozens of those packets filled with delicious chocolate hazelnut goo.
Of course RL is the restaurant attached to the Ralph Lauren store at the corner of Michigan and Chicago. Lots of stylish people lunching in the dining room and outdoors on the sidewalk terrace. And with stylish people come stylish children.
I had never been in the restaurant, but it is exactly what I expected. Its decor is right of a 1920s men's club.
Nothing like a colonoscopy to make me hungry, particularly after the 24-four fast and liquid cleansing. After my last procedure, we went to Michael Jordan's Steakhouse in the Intercontinental Hotel. Michael makes a mean steak.
Today, we decided to try GreenRiver, a restaurant that is on the 18th floor of one of Northwestern Medical's buildings.
