Highlighting Climate Change
Late this afternoon, 20 earnest young people gathered in Daley Plaza hoping to bring attention to the perils posed by climate change. I stopped by just as the group was marching from City Hall to the plaza. A number of those attending took the bullhorn to make what were often impassioned speeches. One was a high school student and others were college students.
The speakers repeatedly referenced Donald Trump’s desire to return to coal-based energy generation, which resonated with me. Earlier in the week I had heard a podcast reporting that the State of Iowa now is more reliant on wind turbines for electric power than coal-powered generation. It ranks second among the states in wind power generation, with Texas occupying the number one slot. Naturally, I wondered why anyone would oppose clean energy, particularly because the industry is creating good jobs, including manufacturing ones. Yet, Donald Trump wants to return to the Fifties and primacy of fossil fuels, particularly coal. This is another example of Donald Trump’s twisted logic.
After just 15 minutes, the group marched the short distance to Federal Plaza for more speeches and chants. The entire affair took no more than one hour.
